The Path Forward with Palmer Holland’s Four Pillars

Written by Sam Brooks, Marketing Director- CASE

Staying updated on these trends is crucial for making informed decisions, optimizing product performance, and meeting the ever-growing expectations of your customers. Our goal is to provide you with valuable information to help you stay ahead of the curve and leverage the latest innovations from our principals to your advantage.

As environmental concerns continue to rise and regulatory pressures increase, the industry is making significant strides towards more sustainable practices. Palmer Holland’s CASE sustainability portfolio encompasses all aspects of the value chain, from the raw materials our principals manufacture to the end-use products our customers create. We provide sustainable solutions to enhance the world in which we live. Let’s explore the critical importance of sustainability and how it is shaping the future of paints and coatings.

Our Pillars of Sustainability

Palmer Holland's four pillars of sustainability are biobased and renewable raw materials, volatile organic compound (VOC) reduction, durability, and production efficiency. These pillars represent the foundation of our sustainability approach which not only helps meet regulatory requirements but also aligns with the growing consumer demand for more eco-friendly products.

Biobased and Renewable Raw Materials

The industry has notably shifted towards a stronger emphasis on biobased and renewable raw materials. This has been driven by regulatory compliance, market demand, consumer preference, and innovation.

Regulatory Compliance
Stricter worldwide environmental regulations push our customers to adopt more sustainable raw materials. Governments and international bodies are setting higher standards for emissions, waste management, and the use of hazardous substances.
Market Demand and Consumer Preference
The industry has experienced an increase in consumer demand for eco-friendly products. Consumers are more aware of the environmental impact of the products they use and actively seek sustainable alternatives.
Innovation
Many CASE manufacturers are innovating with biobased materials, reducing their overall carbon footprint and lessening dependence on incumbent petrochemical raw materials.  Many of these new product formulations offer unique properties and benefits, such as improved biodegradability, reduced toxicity, and enhanced performance characteristics.

VOC Reduction

Reducing VOC content in paints and coatings is a critical step towards sustainability. As awareness of the health and environmental issues of VOCs grows, customers and consumers are seeking products with reduced impact. Many of our markets have switched to low VOC and zero VOC materials. VOC regulations are increasingly being enforced not only at the federal level but also down to individual state levels, resulting in stricter and more localized environmental standards. Palmer Holland and our principals are keeping a strong pulse on these evolving regulations to ensure we offer products that meet or exceed these stringent standards.

Durability

Enhancing the longevity of coatings reduces the need for frequent applications, thereby conserving resources and minimizing waste. There have been many innovations in durable coatings to ensure longer-lasting protection and better performance, which are essential for both environmental and economic sustainability. Many of our Principals have focused innovation on improved performance ultimately leading to waste minimalization, resource conservation, and cost-savings.

Production Efficiency

By focusing on high-performance, renewable, and efficient raw materials, paints, and coatings, companies can significantly enhance their production efficiency, reduce environmental impact (CO2 emissions), and improve their operational cost-effectiveness. There are a variety of ways you can enhance production efficiency:
High-Performance Raw Materials
Using high-performance raw materials that are easy to disperse, have faster dry times, and have higher film build can significantly streamline manufacturing processes by reducing the complexity and number of steps involved. These materials often provide better coverage and require fewer coats, which saves time and reduces the energy needed for production.
Low-Temperature Curing Agents
Raw materials that enable low-temperature curing of coatings can reduce energy consumption. These agents allow coatings to cure at lower temperatures, saving the energy typically required for high-temperature processes and enhancing overall production efficiency.
Water-Based and Solvent-Free Formulations
The shift towards water-based and solvent-free raw materials minimizes the need for VOCs, reducing the environmental footprint. These formulations are easier to handle, require less intensive safety measures, and can lead to cleaner production processes with less hazardous waste generation.
Additives for Improved Stability
Raw materials that improve the stability of paint formulations can extend shelf life and reduce waste. Stabilizers and preservatives ensure that paints maintain their quality over time, reducing the frequency of batch rejections and waste generation.
