Arkema Expands Distributor Network for Plastic Additives

 
Arkema Coating Resins, a business unit of Arkema, announced today the addition of two new distributors for the company’s line of performance enhancing additives used in PVC compounds and engineering plastics. Palmer Holland Inc. and OMYA will be joining G.E. Chaplin Inc. as authorized distributors of these Arkema products worldwide.


“By expanding our distribution network, we can better meet growing demand for these products,” Michael Wurst, North American Market Manager for Arkema Coating Resins Plastics Additives, explained. “It also allows us to tap into the specialized strengths of our current and new distribution partners to provide the best possible service and products based on application and market needs.”


Palmer Holland will be responsible for Arkema plastic additives used in Engineering Resins, as well as Biostrength®plastic additives used in PLA compounds. OMYA will be responsible for additives used in PVC compounds for rigid and opaque applications. G.E. Chaplin Inc. will provide additives used in PVC compounds for flexible and calendered sheet applications, as well as transparent PVC applications.

Arkema manufactures products for these markets globally from its facilities in Mobile, AL and Visslingen, The Netherlands. The new distribution agreements begin on April 1, 2016 for OMYA and April 11, 2016 for Palmer Holland Inc.

Ali Hite Solves Leveling Issue, Wins BYK Award

 

We are ecstatic to announce that Ali Hite has won the BYK Innovative Applications Award for her synergy of CLAYTONE AF, LAPONITE RD and BYK-378 in a tire shine formulation. This is the second BYK award win in a row for Palmer Holland as Greg Liedtke won the previous summer.


A customer of Ali’s uses the Claytone AF and Laponite RD in their tire shine formulations. Ali introduced BYK 378 as the customer is working to reduce surface tension in a high molecular weight, polyalkylene glycol-based coating for application on tires.


Her customer evaluated this material in their system and confirmed it does help solve the leveling issues that are occurring.  The sample has been approved, the BYK-878 is now being used in conjunction with the organoclay products in the tire shine system.

Allnex Offers CYMEL® Resin Grades with Lower Free Formaldehyde Limits

In proactive response to a European regulatory change and customer demand for lower free formaldehyde product offerings, Allnex has been reviewing approaches to reduce free formaldehyde in select grades within its product portfolio.

Effective as of January 1, 2016, formaldehyde will be re-classified in chemical products containing equal to or greater than 0,1% free formaldehyde. This re-classification is part of the 6th ATP (EU Commission Regulation 605/2014) amendments. This change impacts labeling requirements throughout the coatings value chain for materials containing free formaldehyde above this threshold.

Based on improved process capabilities at its manufacturing facilities, Allnex is pleased to announce that it will lower the free formaldehyde limits and reportable Safety Datasheet (SDS) values to less than 0,1% on the following melamine-formaldehyde resins:

• CYMEL® 303 LF
• CYMEL® 1168
• CYMEL® 1130
• CYMEL® 1133
• CYMEL® 1161
• CYMEL® 3020

The reduction of free formaldehyde in these products will not result in other change to product specifications as these more stringent requirements are able to be met within the current process capabilities at Allnex’s various plants. In addition, due to the lower free formaldehyde level achieved on CYMEL® 303 LF, CYMEL® 303 ULF (Ultra Low Formaldehyde) resin will be discontinued.

These lower free formaldehyde products are complemented by formaldehyde-free resins (CYMEL® NF 3041 and CYMEL® NF 2000) that Allnex already supplies to the market.
