Arkema‚Äôs Clearstrength® XT100: Better Dispersion = Limited Impact on Viscosity

Gone are the days of being stuck with standard core-shell modifiers. No more will we have to suffer through a lack of toughness and increased viscosity. Arkema and Palmer Holland are proud to introduce Clearstrength® XT100. XT100 is a toughening agent designed to meet the most demanding technical requirements expected of thermoset applications such as structural adhesives and high performance composites.

Clearstrength® XT100 is an easily dispersible powder that provides outstanding viscosity control which translates to better application properties. For example, many composite materials made from an infusion process can see a significantly increased viscosity of the host system when introduced to other core shell impact modifiers. This effect is drastically reduced when using XT100 (see Fig. 1).

Why use Clearstrength® XT100?

  • Easily dispersible powder in most liquid resin systems
  • Exhibits limited effect on liquid resin system viscosity
  • Provides outstanding toughening effect in a wide range of service temperatures
  • Increases toughness of thermoset systems
  • Replaces standard core-shell modifier powders as well as liquid masterbatches of pre-dispersed core-shell particles
  • Easily dispersed at very low shear rates
  • Best balance of properties. See Fig. 2 with XT100 in a methacrylate structural adhesive formulation

Where should you use Clearstrength® XT100?

  • Thermoset systems such as structural adhesives and high performance composites. Most liquid resin systems such as methacrylate and epoxy resin.
  • In a wide range of applications such as building and construction, wind energy, bus and truck, marine, rail car, automotive, medical device, and sports equipment.

Arkema Expands Territory Agreement with Palmer Holland

Cleveland, OH – Effective February 1, 2018– Arkema announced the expansion of the geographic distribution territory of Palmer Holland for the Orgasol® and Rilsan® D products for coating additive applications.

Palmer Holland’s distribution territory will now extend from New England, across the northern U.S., to the West Coast, including the states of Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. Accounts in the region currently serviced directly by Arkema will continue in the same manner.

The Orgasol® and Rilsan® D products are high performance coating additives, designed mainly for liquid and UV coatings. Based on Arkema’s specialty polyamide chemistry, these high performance additives improve multiple performance aspects of the formulation, such as abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, gloss reduction, hardness, and also texture creation. These products are used in multiple market segments, such as coil, wood, automotive, electronics, and transfer paper.

"Since 2009, the Palmer Holland organization has done an outstanding job promoting these high value added products," commented Josh Gingras, North American Business Manager. "The Orgasol® and Rilsan D® product ranges are a good fit with the Palmer Holland organization. We look forward to supporting them as they grow the business in the expanded distribution territory.”

Ron Zmich, Vice President of Sales at Palmer Holland, added, “It has been a pleasure partnering with Arkema’s specialty polyamides team over the past 10 years. We look forward to contributing to continued growth in this product space for years to come across this expanded service footprint.”

Arkema Press Release Regarding Crosby, TX Plant

Read below for a press release from Arkema, Inc. posted on 8/31/2017:

At approximately 2 a.m. CDT, we were notified by the Harris County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) of two explosions and black smoke coming from the Arkema Inc. plant in Crosby, Texas. Local officials had previously established an evacuation zone in an area 1.5 miles from our plant, based on their assessment of the situation.

We continue to work closely with federal, state and local authorities to manage the situation.

As we communicated in recent days, our site followed its hurricane preparation plan in advance of the recent hurricane and we had redundant contingency plans in place. However, unprecedented flooding overwhelmed our primary power and two sources of emergency backup power. As a result, we lost critical refrigeration of the products on site. Some of our organic peroxides products burn if not stored at low temperature.

We have been working closely with public officials to manage the implications of this situation, and have communicated with the public the potential for product to explode and cause an intense fire. Organic peroxides are extremely flammable and, as agreed with public officials, the best course of action is to let the fire burn itself out.

We want local residents to be aware that product is stored in multiple locations on the site, and a threat of additional explosion remains. Please do not return to the area within the evacuation zone until local emergency response authorities announce it is safe to do so.

Organic peroxides are a family of compounds that are used in a wide range of applications, such as making pharmaceuticals and construction materials.

Arkema Creates New Generation of Acrylic Impact Modifiers For Engineering Resins

Arkema has developed Durastrength® 440 impact modifier, an industry-leading acrylic Impact modifier for PC and alloys. Durastrength® 440 is based on acrylic chemistry designed to impart excellent ambient and cold temperature impact to PC and PC blends.

Key benefits include:

  1. Outstanding low temp impact resistance: Similar performance to MBS so can withstand -40°C and still remain ductile.
  2. Excellent weatherability and thermal aging: Retaining color and mechanical properties upon exposure to these elements.
  3. Excellent colorability: Minimal impact on the color vs conventional acrylics.
